I’ve found that there are two things that stand in the way of what we want. Whether it is a leadership position, or a successful project or whatever it is for you. One: is that you don’t think you can have it and two: is you don’t really want it.
Of course when I ask my clients if they really want the outcome they you would say ‘ duh, I wouldn’t be here, having a coaching conversation with you if I didn’t want this outcome.’ My answer is, if you really wanted it, you would have it.
Not really wanting it might mean that you want the outcome because you think you should want it ( but you don’t want it) or you hold certain beliefs about the undesirability of the outcome that you are in resistance to it.
For an example if you believe that being a leader in the workplace means you have to go to war every day blocking missiles of aggression, discrimination and sabotage or if you think you would have to make all of these big outcomes happen on your own, of course you will be in resistance. It’s overwhelming and undesirable.
It’s true that prejudice is a thing that you will be faced with as a Black woman in leadership or that the higher you go, the more accountability you will have. But we often distort the enormity of the undesirables in our mind such that that it fuels our subconscious repulsion of that outcome.
