How well are you managing your energy budget?

How well are you managing your energy budget ?

In one of my stints with weight loss I came across the concept of a calorie budget. Depending on how much weight you want to lose, you are allocated a budget of a number calories per day, each type of food weighs a certain number of calories. Take aside the merits or mental health impact of this type of program, it works.

In the same way I would like to think of my energy. I have a budget each day, it’s not unlimited, when it gets depleted I experience burn out. So I have to be mindful of where and how I spend it .

When we were in Lockdown during the early days of Covid 19 we realised that our concept of time was flawed. Suddenly we had plenty of time but most of us still couldn’t write that book, finish that degree or start that project. We had time but our energy was depleted by worry and grief.

In the above weight loss program we were thought the concept of empty calories, that there certain things like drinks, ate up your calories but did not fill you up. You were advised to avoid those in order to manage your limited calorie budget.

One of the empty calories that deplete our energy budget is regret. It takes up so much energy and serves no purpose because you can’t undo what you did and the person that you were when you made that regretful decision couldn’t have made any other decision. That’s just where you were.

Are you letting regret take up the energy that you could be using to do what you need to do to get to the next level of leadership, income and impact ?
