Can you expand the definition of the value you bring to the workplace?
Productivity can become a tyrant. A slave master who expects a certain number of output per day. The truth is that normal human beings are not created that way. Like nature our productivity has a rhythm.
Just like autumn, winter, spring and summer has different requirements from the farmer. So does our bodies. Some people are more productive in the mornings. Some work easier in the afternoons. Some are stimulated by the beginning of the week and their productivity wanes as the week starts, some start slow and finish high.
Some people are seasonal. I know I get more energised in spring. This is a good time for me to start projects.
There’s also time to reflect and a time for action. There’s a time for building relationships through small talk or a listening ear. All of that makes the fullness of what you bring to work, not just how many emails you’ve sent or projects you’ve completed.
Your ideas, your reflections, your very presence in the workplace contributes to the culture, motivation, ambience and productivity. Do you count that as the value you bring to the workplace?
