What is the value at stake?

What is the value at stake here?

Michelle Obama was asked why she didn’t wear braids while she was still in the White House. She responded by saying something along the lines of needing to choose her battles, needing to calculate where she would spend her political capital on and where she needed the focus to be.

With the onset of identity politics, members of the dominant culture have been complaining that they have to now walk on eggshells in the workplace. That people are easily offended. Unfortunately this is what marginalised people have been forced to do for eons.

We have to do the math all the time. We talk about authenticity in the workplace. While often authenticity is a luxury we can’t afford in certain instances. We talk about advocating for oneself, when at times, the political environment does not allow us to safely advocate. So we continually do the math – what is the bigger picture here? -what is the value at stake here? And as you can imagine, it is exhausting.
