Who does this remind you of?
I’ve noticed that life brings to us unresolved issues to our present experiences – including in the workplace, for resolution. Whenever my coaching clients are dealing with a person who triggers them at work, asking the question; who does this remind you off? Often opens up insight into where these unresolved issues may be coming from and provides an opportunity to resolve them.
I’ve certainly had my share of unresolved childhood issues showing up at work. The actors were different but the issues were the same. A person you are in conflict with may represent an unresolved issue with a parent, a sibling, a bully at school, a childhood friend, or a teacher who may not have liked you. The conflict with this person at work might be giving you an opportunity to resolve what you couldn’t when you didn’t have the power.
This is not to take any accountability from that person for their actions, toxicity, projections and any wrongdoing on their part. They are wholly responsible for that.
What is important is to realise what this current experience represents. By recognising these patterns and working through the underlying issues, you can become a more grounded person who is able to better withstand these situations.
