Does your voice matter?
One of the challenges that Black women face in the workplace is in having their say. Not necessarily in advocating for themselves but also in sharing their ideas and opinions.
This is not always an issue of confidence. If you are the only one in the room who looks like yourself and continuously have your views ignored, this can shake even the most confident person.
This fear does not only manifest as being quiet in meetings, it can also show up as talking too quickly – not giving yourself time to clearly articulate what you want to say, talking too long and repeating yourself. All these results in the same experience, that of not being heard.
I remind the women that I coach to be intentional about the value of what they need to say. The value of having their often unique voice in that table. However, one can never underestimate the contribution of allies in amplifying Black women’s voices.
Leaders who are self aware – who check their biases, their need to interrupt, their impatience when engaging with Black women. You can make an impact in the most difficult environment, however you make the most impact in an environment that allows you to.
